And just like that Summer is almost here!
Kate and I dropped off the last of our Blanket Wraps for the 2018-2019 season at ChristNet in April. Since the winter was so long and cold, we were able to continue handing out all the way into spring! To conclude the season, Kate and I attended the GirlPreneur Expo in Detroit. We love this event as we get to meet other inspiring young women and make some great connections! We displayed some of the new patterns that will be handed out next year and saw some old friends! Kate got to meet one of the girls I was working with for the Girl’s World Expo named Lena and we loved seeing all the progress she has made in her headband business! Thank you to TRose for having us at such an awesome entrepreneur event.
Now that winter is over, we are actively working on our agenda and projects for the Sewing Class at the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries Genesis House! Our plan was approved by Mrs. McMillan and this year we will be teaching TWO 3 week courses (last year we did one 8 week course that met once a week). Our 3 week courses will meet twice a week allowing for more women and girls the opportunity to attend and finish the class. We had a few students who started the class but didn’t finish as they were moving into permanent housing!
We learned a lot during our class last summer and we feel very fortunate that we are allowed to come teach again. Our students gave us some great feedback last summer and we have used that feedback to update our agenda AND we have purchased 2 more sewing machines (we will now have 8 sewing machines in class). This summer we will be making headbands, pillowcases, toiletry carriers, and possibly pajama shorts. We can’t wait to see where their creativity takes them with these projects! The days we work on pillowcases will be Give-Back Days in which the women will be making colorful pillowcases to hand out to their friends also living in the shelter. We hope they are as excited as we are about this new idea!
In addition to finalizing our summer class lesson plans, we are always working on blanket wraps. We never stop sewing AND we now have people and sewing groups helping us! Our goal every summer is to make as many as possible so we are ready to start handing out when it gets cold.
We have recently received texts from some of the women from last year asking if we would be back, so we already have some enthusiastic people ready to learn! Follow us on Facebook and Instagram and our website for updates as we start our second summer of MK Blanket Wraps Summer Sewing Classes!
